Sledge Hockey Program Launches During Rick Hansen End of Day Celebration

On December 18th the Rick Hansen 25thAnniversary Tour came through Sault Ste Marie. Diane Morrell was the official medal bearer. Sault Accessible Sports Inc. put on an impressive sledge demonstration officially launching this long awaited program at the John Rhodes Centre. Aaron Gavey and Brad Baber, 1993 Memorial Cup Champion Greyhound Alumni, also participated in the demonstration with some of our players. Our Mayor, MPP, and MP were all in attendance and gave short speeches. We recently secured funding to outfit the members of our Sledge team with protective equipment. A huge thank you to Steve Hollingshead from Tourism Sault Ste Marie, the city’s Community Future Development Corporation, and Canadian Tire for making this possible. We are currently in the process of getting a logo made for the team by the talented Wendy Houle and will be purchasing jersey’s soon. Those who wish to get involved either as a participant or a volunteer will find us every Thursday from one to three at the John Rhodes pad number two. The goal of the team is to organize tournaments with other Northern Ontario cities in the future
